I like to pick up a copy of the farmers almanac, you can find them at tractor supply, or at Kroger in the book section. They become more prevalent in stores at the end of the year between October and November. They are not always accurate but it is fun to see what kind of weather and growing season is predicted for the fallowing year.
Sometime's you begin to notice a migration pattern in the birds you see at you feeders, and then one year those birds will come late or early. Its fun to check with your almanac to see if the changes, in the predicted weather line up with the migration of the birds.
The Farmers Almanac 2017 Says
"La Nina has the opposite effect on global weather as its brother El Nino" "La Nina basically magnifies the usual weather condition" "....50/50 Chance that La Nina will develop at the end of 2016."
"Downright Frigid February"
"Jan 20th - 23rd, fair pleasant conditions quickly give way to unsettled conditions."
I noticed the Canadian Geese are back a little earlier than they normally are, they also look like they are starting to nest.
I also noticed the male red headed woodpeckers outside fighting and calling for a mate.
I also saw the Eastern Blue Bird and I don't normally see them until spring, when I start putting out the mill worms and the fruit cakes. Things are changing out my window and the birds are showing early signs of spring but its only January! Will the birds be right and get spring started early? Or will the Almanac be right, and a frigid February begin.
