Citizens of Perry and Houston County:
Please support a new animal shelter to serve Perry and South Houston County. This upcoming SPLOST is our last chance for 6 more years to improve the conditions for homeless and lost animals. The existing shelter is antiquated and the infrastructure is much worse and more prone to the spread of disease than in Macon’s existing shelter or the old one that was replaced in Warner Robins. In the Perry building, open drains running though kennels are conduits of disease, the porous aged materials are not adequate for proper cleaning, and the kennel sizes are far too small for humane housing. In fact, the concrete kennels are so undersized, kennel beds that have been donated cannot be used inside the building.

Rodent and pest problems are unmanageable due to structural cracks and crevices in walls and gaping holes in the rotted ceiling and roof. The wiring and panel box is undersized and overloaded, and the plumbing is a never-ending challenge of leaks and drain blockages. These are not maintenance issues but are characteristics of a structure that needs to be replaced. This fact can be proven by even a cursory review of recommendations by organizations running the gamut of animal care, from veterinarians to rescues to breeders.

Far more than half the citizenry has pets, and those pets can sometimes become lost or must be surrendered for a variety of reasons. I assure you that you would not be pleased were your animal exposed to such conditions. All the humane care by Animal Control and volunteers cannot overcome the severe handicap of a worn out facility. This will be the third time citizens have made the request, spanning 2 SPLOSTs and 10 years. It may be our last chance for the needed improvement.
